What You Need to Know About Bioluminescence in the Manialtepec Lagoon

Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon that occurs when certain microorganisms present in the ocean or lagoons produce chemical reactions when they are disturbed or agitated. For this reason, at night the water can be seen glowing in a bright, fluorescent blue color, similar to stars reflected on the surface. When you touch the water or swim in it, the lights move and become even more visible. This phenomenon can only be observed in a few places in Mexico: Holbox, Quintana Roo; Xpicob, Campeche; Bucerías, Nayarit; and of course, the Lagoons of Manialtepec and Chacahua in Oaxaca. In Oaxaca, the best place to observe bioluminescence is the Manialtepec Lagoon, located approximately 20 minutes from Puerto Escondido. Thanks to the mixture of fresh and salt water, the ideal environment is created for this spectacular bioluminescent phenomenon to occur. However, it is not visible all the time, as it depends on various natural factors such as the phase of the moon, the tides, and the water temperature. Lunar Effect: The visibility of this phenomenon depends directly on the lunar phase. It is best observed when there is greater darkness, especially during a new moon. In contrast, on full moon nights, it is unlikely to be seen clearly. For this reason, it is important to check the lunar calendar or inquire before booking the lagoon tour, in order to avoid a less satisfying experience.   Low tide: when the sea is calm, there is a greater chance of observing the phenomenon, as this is when a higher concentration of the microorganisms that produce this effect gathers. The best months to observe bioluminescence: largely depend on the lunar calendar. For example, November is not usually the most suitable month for this activity, as there is a full moon during much of the month, which reduces the visibility of the phenomenon. Therefore, the most recommended months are during the summer, especially from June to October. Recommendations for a better experience during the tour: Bioluminescence is best observed when there is no light at all; therefore, it is necessary to go deeper into the lagoon to see the phenomenon more clearly.
